Dry Facial Skin? If You’re Over 40 – Have Your Thyroid Checked
September 4th, 2010 | Author: adminDo you suffer from dry facial skin? It not only makes your skin looks dull, lifeless, and crinkly, but it can make you look years older.
What Causes Dry Skin?
Technically, dry facial skin is skin that has a low level of oil (sebum) — causing a dull, parched look. Because it lacks moisture it also lacks plumpness. In some cases, it can become chapped, flaky and cracked – which can also be painful!
Other causes of dry facial skin include:
o under active thyroid or diabetes
o Premenopause – estrogen deficiency
o vitamin deficiencies like vitamins A, D, and essential fatty acids like omega 3 fish oils
o use of certain drugs like antihistamines and diuretics
o constant exposure to harsh soaps, cosmetics, or wind and cold temperatures
So What Can You Do?
There are plenty of steps you can take to soften and moisturize the skin. But first it helps to find out what the cause is…
If you’re over 40 years of age — Have your thyroid checked.
Have you noticed extra weight gain lately, while still watching you food intake and exercising? If so, you could be suffering from sub-clinical (slightly low) thyroid function. It’s not so severe that you or your doctor will notice, but just enough to cause small symptoms like sudden dry skin and hair, slight hair loss, slight weight gain, and lower than normal energy levels. Tell your doctor if these symptoms persist and ask for a thyroid test.
If you’re a woman and over 40, have your other hormones checked, especially estrogen. A decline in estrogen is known to cause dry, itchy skin and other symptoms. Perhaps, it’s just a case of vitamin deficiency. Many people in this country are severely deficient in omega 3 fish oils. Especially, those who suffer from various skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and seborrhea.
Since many people don’t like or can’t afford to eat fish 3 times a week – I’d be afraid of the toxins too – then supplementing with fish oils is a great alternative. Fish oils will also benefit your heart and other organs.
What’s the pH of Your Facial Cleanser
The most important factor in dry facial skin is to stop using soap and even tap water if possible. There are plenty of cleansers on the market -you need to find one that’s gentle, soothing, and has a good pH balance. See information below for advice on which ones were tested to be the best/worst – according to one Medical Journal.
Emu Oil
Not only is Emu Oil soothing and moisturizing, it’s healing oil. Emu oil has been around for thousands of year and has been used by the Aborigines. Having to brave the harsh sun, they knew that Emu Oil can heal and protect their skin.
Lactic Acid
You wouldn’t think of putting an exfoliating acid on dry, cracked, sore skin…
However, the drier your skin, the less chance of a good moisturizer penetrating due to all the flaky, dead skin cells clogging up the pores and preventing your skin from absorbing anything.
Not only will a mild, cream-based lactic acid (which is a milk acid) helps to gently exfoliate the top, dead skin cells, but it’s also a great humectant. It’s hygroscopic, meaning it helps prevent moisture loss by attracting or pulling in moisture from the air.
This is one of my all time favorite humectants – it helps to slough off the upper layer of skin exposing soft dewy skin and encourage new skin cell regeneration.

Choosing the Right Daily Facial Cleanser
September 1st, 2010 | Author: adminA good facial cleanser is a must to achieve a healthy and radiant skin. Your daily cleanser removes the oil and dirt that have accumulated on your face throughout the day. Having a good cleanser helps you avoid common skin problems such as pimples, blackheads and other skin irritations. But with all the different kinds of facial cleansers available in the market today, how would you know what is best for you?
The first thing that you have to do before choosing your cleanser is to determine what type of skin you have. There are about five types of facial skin. There’s dry, oily, combination (both dry and oily), acne prone and sensitive. There are cleansers that are specially formulated to a specific skin type. For example, cleansers that are formulated for dry skin usually has more moisturizing power as compared to cleansers formulated for oily skin. Once you have determined what your skin type is, the next thing that you have to do is to check the ingredients of the facial cleanser. Do not buy alcohol based cleansers because it might be harmful for the skin. Also, avoid buying scented soaps because it might cause acne breakouts.
Basically, choosing the right facial cleanser is a trial and error process. There’s really a product out there that is perfect for your skin. As long as you follow my tips above then you’ll have an easier time choosing one. Your daily facial cleanser need not be very expensive because there are also a lot of affordable facial cleansers that work well. Happy shopping!

Secrets of Olive Oil Facial Cleansers Revealed
August 29th, 2010 | Author: adminMen with great physiques usually enjoy displaying their attributes to an audience, removing their shirts in the sun and on the beach, allowing for natural tanning of the skin. This might seem great to some but this male is liable to dry out his glorious skin. An olive oil facial cleaner may help both men and women who love the sun and want to lower its dehydrating effects on their bodies. A facial cleanser containing olive oil will disperse dirt and pollutants on the face and will also act as a make-up remover.
As cleansers clean the face, some do cause harm to the skin and to its endothelial cells, because of their exfoliation action that removes dirt particles. The foam formed in olive oil facial cleansers act as a protector of delicate cells while the skin is cleansed, living it soft and silky. The clean fresh aroma of a cleanser made with olive oil is pleasant to the nasal senses. If something smells so good, it must be great for the skin! But there is even more that can be achieved for the skin than simply cleansing it and refreshing it. Skin needs to be consistently nourished to stop its aging.
Aging skin is unable to create collagen and elastin, essential proteins that provide the skin with its form and elasticity. If skin does not have these proteins it will begin to wrinkle and sag. As our bodies dispel hundreds of dead skin cells daily, new cells are produced to take their place. Skin that is not nourished with its proper food will not be able to create living cells. As you begin to comprehend this fact about the biochemistry of our largest organ you will appreciate why its nourishing is vital. Reactions with the complex substance enzymes are occurring in our skin with minerals such as zinc and copper, working together to repair and maintain skin’s resilience.
Numbers of vitamins along with zing and copper are absolutely necessary for the skin to help with ongoing daily stresses and to provide skin with its needed vitality. If skin is too dry food will not be supplied to the skin and its endothelial cells by the use of an olive oil facial cleanser, as collagen and elastin cannot be created by this method. This fact gives us insight as to why simply cleansing the skin is not sufficient. Skin that is dry is unsightly and feels taut, but even the best olive oil facial cleansers will not give skin its power and elasticity in order to remain young, glowing and enabled to perform necessary biochemical activities.
Most potent skin care products will provide the skin with everything it needs to complete its normal functions and will give a firm and youthful appearance to the face. Where can these products be purchased you ask. If you are wise you will begin to study relevant information on the internet and check out exact ingredients in such products and then use this valuable information to discover the product that is truly the best money can buy for the continued health and nourishment of your skin.

Top Facial Cleansers – Safely and Naturally Cleanse Your Face
August 26th, 2010 | Author: adminIs there such a thing as a top facial cleanser? Would you even be able to recognize a top facial cleanser if you saw one? There are so many products on the market today all claiming to be the best so you have to know about the ingredients that are contained in these products in order to choose the top facial cleansers.
The top facial cleansers should contain natural, safe ingredients and not harsh chemicals that are so commonly used in skin care products nowadays. These natural ingredients are safer to use on your sensitive skin.
You should use a facial cleanser every two weeks. It’s main goal is to thoroughly cleanse your skin while removing toxins in your skin.

One of the most effective skin cleansers I have ever used is manufactured from a company based in New Zealand. This company spends very little on advertisement and most of their money goes towards research and development. They make some of the best products on the market today, all without using harsh chemicals.
Their best facial cleanser is made of the most organic, natural ingredients ever used in skin care products. Ingredients such as:
Allantoin: A natural compound found in some herbs. It will soothe skin and ease inflammation. It has been proven to stimulate skin growth and help restore damaged skin.
Shea Butter: A natural moisturizer and an emollient which softens the skin and soothes irritated skin.
Bentone Gel and Kaolin: They both work in synergy to improve the cleansing effectiveness on your skin.
These ingredients were developed in this top facial cleanser to give your face and neck a deep and revitalizing cleansing treatment. It is specially formulated for all skin types and should ideally be used twice per month. Your skin will feel fresh and glowing after a several use.

Facial Cleanser Cream – Is the One You’re Using Slowly and Silently Eating Away at Your Health?
August 26th, 2010 | Author: adminIt’s incredible to me that no-one is out there actively warning us against the health risks prominent researchers have found in widely sold facial cleanser cream.
Before you next stop and buy facial cleanser cream, learn at least a little about how to protect your skin’s health.
I say this because many facial cleansers on the market contain ingredients that are actually common allergens. But what’s worse, some of them contain hazardous synthetic chemicals that can damage your health.
Dermatologists have always recommended we avoid facial cleanser cream and other health and beauty aids that contain either chemical preservatives or fragrances.
They write these warnings because parabens cause too many, well-documented, allergic reactions. Lately these professionals are reporting some of those preservatives may also cause cancer.
Numerous studies have linked cancer to the chemical preservatives called parabens, for example. Researchers feel that parabens are one of the biggest health threats facing us, because they are found in so many health and beauty aids. And as you know millions of people are using these aids — global hand and body care sales alone were worth $9.3 billion last year.
Another issue is that companies tend to use a number of different paraben preservatives in their products. For example, there are some facial cleansers on the market that contain five different parabens.
Smell is another problem you may rub up against in your facial cleanser cream. In fact, the term “fragrance” on a products label has been referred to as a “chemical minefield”.
Cosmetic companies are not specific on their labels about what chemicals they use to create their products, so there is no way to determine what creams are safe and what are not. Many of the chemicals which could be used to generate a fragrance are toxic. So I feel strongly it’s safest to completely avoid facial cleansers that contain artificial fragrances or perfumes.
The health risk may be small, but there’s no need to take it because there are effective facial cleansers on the market that contain nothing but purified water and tea tree oil. Only about 6% of the population is allergic to the oil and its antibacterial activity is well known.
Orange oil is another effective ingredient for facial cleanser cream.
The oil is produced in the rind of the fruit and extracted through distillation. It is effective and safe for all types of cleansing although it may too strong for those with very sensitive skin. If one product seems too strong, you might want to look for one with a lower concentration of the ingredient. Only about 3% of the population is sensitive to the milder solutions.
Colloidal oatmeal powder can also be used to make a safe and effective facial cleanser cream.
Several companies sell the powder. You simply put a little powder in the palm of your hand or on a clean wash cloth. Wet it with a little water, wash and rinse. No one has shown sensitivity to facial cleansers with colloidal oatmeal. In fact, it is often recommended for treating irritated, inflamed or itching skin and conditions like eczema.
You may also be interested in the occasional use of a deep-cleansing clay mask. It will open and clean out pores, and people find a mask is good for preventing pimples and removing some blackheads.
Every day, in addition to your facial cleanser cream, you probably use an effective moisturizer. If you have excessive oiliness, choose one that contains natural plant oils that balance sebum production. But shop for health and safety first. Ignore the smell, even if it is delicious!

Five Steps to Healthy Skin
August 23rd, 2010 | Author: adminYou might have heard these five principles of healthy skin before, but it is always good to review.
1. Your diet matters – Avoid greasy food, caffeine and chocolate as much as possible. Once a week at most, so save it for a special occasion.
2. Clean skin is healthy skin – Follow a daily cleaning regiment twice a day. Upon waking up in the morning, and just prior to going to sleep, wash with warm water and any over-the-counter facial cleanser that is labelled as ‘natural’ or ‘mild.’ Do not rub the skin, but gently wash. Do not dry with a towel. Follow the warm wash with a cool water rinse. Allow to air dry. Apply your favorite natural facial skin moisturizing cream when face is dry.
3. Wear natural makeup everyday. It should have sun protection in it of at least 15 SPF (sun protection factor). Even if you just wear a foundation, that is better than nothing. I recommend mineral makeups of any type. Whatever makeup you choose, always cleanse the face first and apply a facial moisturizer before any makeup is put on.
4. Exercise helps – so get as much as you have time for. Take at least a fifteen minute walk, preferably outdoors, to increase circulation and therefor increase the blood flow to your skin. At least once a week get out into the forest or other natural area and take a brisk walk in some clean air.
5. Facial masks are not to be laughed at – at least once a week supplement your clean skin routine with a facial deep cleansing mask of your choice. Buy a kit at the grocery store or go online and find a recipe for an at-home facial mask. Invite your girlfriends over and make it home spa day, and help each other apply your masks. Cucumbers and yogurt rule at my house!
If you follow these five principles of clean skin, you are well on your way to a lifetime of healthy skin.

How to Choose the Best Facial Skin Care Products
August 14th, 2010 | Author: adminTaking care of your skin is very important, and this is no more true than it is right now in the age obsessed and beauty obsessed world that we live in. There are so many different skin care products on the market that it can, however, become very difficult to choose the best ones. As such, consider these tips on how to choose the best facial products.
You should certainly be looking for natural and botanically based skin care products. Essentially, look for ingredients that you would be willing to eat when you are looking to put anything on your skin because, at the end of the day, your skin is going to absorb it. In any skin care products you look at the main ingredient should always be water.
Make sure that you avoid any product that has petroleum, mineral oil, and all sorts of different chemicals in it. All it decent beauty care products should only really contain natural ingredients, and if anything seems artificial you should avoid it.
Any skin care products you purchase should have a 100% guarantee so that you can get your money back after you have tried it. If a manufacturer is confident that the product actually works then they will be willing to provide you with free samples that you can try before you buy. If they do not offer this, then they may well have something to hide.
Finally, make sure that you consistently tried different brands and different types of skin care product until you find something suitable to you. There are so many out there that it can become very difficult to choose specific products that are going to work, but if you continue to persist you are sure to find something that will give you the results you want eventually.

Acne Treatment
August 11th, 2010 | Author: adminAcne is a condition that close to 100% of the population has at least a little trouble with, typically in the teen years. Most people find that it gradually clears up as they get beyond their teens even with little or no treatment. Many adults if reflecting back to that time in their life might say they had a few pimples, sometimes at inconvenient times, but that it was not a big deal and certainly did not affect their life. A smaller percentage of acne suffers have somewhat or much worse acne that is unsightly, often painful, may scar and can have devastating psychological consequences. Treatment is available for all types of acne usually resulting in significant improvement of the symptoms although more severe cases need to be treated by a physician using medications like oral antibiotics, Accutane or birth control pills.
Acne is usually broken into three types based on symptoms:
Mild- You may see quite a few comdones (blackheads) but not a lot of inflamed lesions (whiteheads) and these lesions are quite close to the surface with no underlying nodules.
Moderate- At this level there will be a significant number of inflamed lesions with quite a few pustules (larger more boil like lesions).
Severe- The person with severe acne will have the symptoms of moderate acne but will additionally exhibit many nodules and large cysts. An individual with severe facial acne will probably also have it on their back and chest.
Most acne in the mild to slightly moderate range can be self treated as long as no scarring is occurring. If the acne is in upper moderate or severe range or if scarring is occurring a health provider experienced in treating acne should be seen. You certainly should also see a physician if there are any other complicating factors such as other medical conditions that may be contributing to the condition or that may make treatment difficult.
To develop your own successful acne treatment program you need to be willing to discipline yourself to faithfully follow a program and be willing to wait for a number of weeks to see significant results. Different people respond to different acne treatments but it is critical to give whatever you are using a chance to work before switching to something else!
First we will briefly explain what acne is. Skin produces oils (sebum) that passes through small channels (ducts) to the surface. During the teen years hormonal changes cause a significant increase in sebum production. At the same time there are also changes in the lining of the ducts that cause the sebum to pass more slowly to the surface and sometimes form plugs in the opening of the duct. Extended exposure to air will cause this plug to become dark often called a blackhead (comdone). Sometimes bacteria will exist in the duct also leading to a small localized infection or whitehead (closed comdone). For some individuals the process if infected ducts and the resulting inflammation progresses to the point of cystic acne.
Acne Treatment
Treating mild to slightly moderate acne as mentioned above requires you to faithfully follow an acne treatment plan. One big mistake that is often made is to try to scrub acne away. Aggressive washing actually can make acne appear worse and certainly does not help! Remember that acne is not caused by dirty skin, it is a result of your unique body chemistry and needs to be treated with the proper products to make it better. Yes you need to keep your face clean, try to keep your hair away as much as possible, try not to rub or scratch at any pimples, but don’t abuse it by aggressive washing. So, how should you wash your face? Use a mild fragrance free facial cleanser (even bar soap is ok if that is all you have). Wash your face morning and night with warm but not hot water and gently pat dry. If you face is especially oily you can wash it once or twice additionally each day but you may need to reapply any medications used. The next step is to apply some type of medication. Most over the counter medications that really work usually contain benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide helps in a couple of ways. First it has antibacterial properties that will decrease the number of whiteheads that develop and secondly it causes the surface skin cells to turnover quicker. At first it may cause some redness and peeling until your skin adjusts to it. You may need to use a gentle oil free lotion if your skin gets too dry. If your skin seams quite sensitive be sure you are using a low strength of benzoyl peroxide (2.5%) and gently wash it off after a couple of hours. Then gradually increase the length of time as your skin begins to tolerate it until you no longer have to wash it off between normal twice daily washings. A number of recent studies have shown that using benzoyl peroxide works as well as or better than oral antibiotics for many mild to moderate cases of acne. Use the products faithfully every day and after a few weeks you should see good results. Because of the way benzoyl peroxides causes a mild skin irritation you should always use a oil free sunscreen before extended sun exposure to help protect your skin.
To save yourself some time searching for appropriate effective products (cleanser, active treatment product, soothing lotion), you might consider one of the acne treatment kits available such as Proactiv. These kits can work very well because of the balanced and complimentary nature of each if the individual products included. Benzoyl peroxide is the key component in all of the best product lines because it works. Generic forms of the acne kits have started to show up in the stores at a lower price, however there is no way to determine if the level of active ingredients is the same.
It is well known what causes acne and studies have shown what works to improve it. As much as many people would like a overnight cure there simply is nothing like this, so don’t throw away your money and start treating your acne with the proven methods!

Why You Need a Sensitive Skin Facial Cleanser
August 8th, 2010 | Author: adminOne of the most important things you need as part of your daily skin care routine is a sensitive skin facial cleanser. This is one area where people have a lot of misconception and confusion. As a result they may cause a lot of damage to their skin.
Most people think that the best facial cleanser is one that gives your face a dry tight feeling. This is just the opposite of what a face cleanser should do. When your skin feels very tight it means that all its oils and moisture have been robbed. If this is a daily occurrence your skin will age very fast. Dry skin is one of the primary causes of wrinkling and sagging of your skin.
If you use a sensitive skin facial cleanser, the skin will be cleaned gently but without taking away the moisture and oils. The cleanser should be able to dislodge the grime and compacted oils from the pores of your skin so that your skin can breathe without any obstructions. This will protect you from black heads and skin eruptions.
The best facial cleanser is one made of natural ingredients. It should not contain surfactants that can irritate and inflame your skin. You should preferably look for one that is not perfumed.
You do not need to wash your face too often. It is best to wash your face only once a day unless you have been exposed to a lot of pollution. Do not use very hot water to wash your face because this may cause your capillaries to burst. Be gentle while washing your face.
A good sensitive skin facial cleanser should be used by people of all ages and skin types without any hesitation. It should be able to rid the skin of impurities while still keeping it healthy.
